When I stop dreaming to waken in morning
I go down to the sea to dream still

There I fly
In seas aglow with the breathing of goddesses and whales
The ocean’s floor sambas into etched lines of splayed light.
A small striped bass greets me familiar by wiggling its tail before turning to regard me with its steady eye. It continues to beckon with that flirtatious tail. So I follow but it quickly loses interest and we part ways.

My puffer fish, Bella, awaits in a favorite place bordering the shore, a canyon faced by a sheer plunge of lava, a verdant meadow beneath the sea. But today it looks as if a herd of goats trespassed, the sea weed chewed to nubs.

Bella and I slowly move to the point. It’s high tide and the waves crash in surf-foam fierce. I never wear fins to contrary swells, currents and waves, preferring to flow with the sea. This strife is unnerving but the swoop-in, swoop-out in a dance borne of so many forces, unseen…tide, moon, black holes and galaxies gentle agitation to joy.

Aerated bubbles from the clash of sea and rock calm to a dazzling glitter; the shimmer transforms to darts of fish, minuscule beings of massive promise for the continuation of all life…ocean and earth.

Sergeant majors, a startle of black and yellow, akin to bumblebees the size of my pinky fingernail ride the champagned water. Butterfly fish, angel fish, cobalt fish, and ten puffers of all colors and sizes join Bella and I in the roiled tumult.

Great boulders line the point, once volcanic lava, thrust from the earth’s nucleus in some ancient aeon. I glide over mountain ranges and canyons, over rock adorned with alien corals and creatures. Escalations of peaks encircle me, but I soar to an escape. A blast of blare water rises…obviously fire breath from a dragon’s lair. I am knowing of their existence for I have seen their trails to the isles. I pause to celebrate this knowledge of being and celebrate my own.

I bid adieu to Bella by wiggling my hands the way she wiggles her fins.

My dream is over. I return to the weight of gravity’s dominion.
